‘Free-from’ as a category is the new cash cow. 🐄

🐄 Premium and in hyper growth in the US, UK, SA, and many more European markets.

🐄 For a glimpse into the numbers, here’s a Kantar report that gives a good indication of sales velocities and higher prices per unit. #topline#revenue#growth

You can access US sources, FoodNavigator being a good source, although I've not attached any because of paywalls. I know that tends to irritate readers of my posts.

The same can be said of South Africa, in the last 5 - 10 year window the food system has deteriorated significantly, in line with other large partners such as the US, UK, some of Europe. More recently, following Covid, there were outbreaks of gastrointestinal virures. Hard to say but the food system has deteriorated, giving rise to upstarts like Wholefoods and Planet Organics, Wellness Warehouse, Holland & Barrett, Ekoshop, to name a mere few.

I am known to plan travel holidays around checking out exciting retail theatre. I also worked in a busy London yoga/ retail studio. The revenue model intrigued me. There's the yoga classes, coffee, juice bar, clothing retail, food, physio. And then there's yoga teacher trainings, workshops, online streaming of live classes. The FlowLab vision for cool life-spaces. pre-WeWork, anchored to Ubuntu, in case there's a billionaire out there willing to invest in happiness movement that connects best of Soul Cycle, Yoga, CrossFit, with locavore food bar for a vital, sporty, nuclear, deeper family experience. #belonging#connection#kindness

In a shop I like flow and new stimulus, but also have a planned visual pathway for further discovery, guided by my curiosity, and where I believe the most innovation is taking place. I also understand pricing and product mixes, and when you're being screwed as a customer.

In stores I like to start at fresh fruit, then beverages depending on the type of shop. Convenience stores in Spain or California, with their speciality coffee roastery's. And fishmarkets! I'm thinking of the one near Santa Barbara. I also like to carefully observe how brands and categories go through their lifecycles e.g. fermented drinks like kombucha, kefir.

Point is, there is a major gap/ opportunity clean up the food chain #foodsecurity which will shift the needle for many mainstream behaviours and addictions, but we need to renegotiate terms, like GDP. We can re-engineer this. It's possible.

🐄 The consumer drivers have until now been a personal pain-point for many of us.

🐄 Ultra processed, highly engineered, poorly regulated food and food systems are driving this. #dirtytricks#cue#pharma

🐄 Limited choice of fresh, healthy, clean options #disease

🐄 Consumers end up paying more for the same basic staples. #inflation or #inflammation
